Today’s post is a writing challenge. This is how it works: participating bloggers picked 4 – 6 words or short phrases for someone else to craft into a post. All words must be used at least once and all the posts will be unique as each writer has received their own set of words. That’s the challenge, here’s a fun twist; no one who’s participating knows who got their words and in what direction the writer will take them. Until now.
At the end of this post, you’ll find links to the other blogs featuring this challenge. Check them all out, see what words they got and how they used them.

We’ve said goodbye to 2016 and hello to 2017 and not a moment too soon if you ask me. I’m hoping that as this new year begins it will be much better, but then there’s Trump so that kind of shoots that theory all to hell and back. So far, I’m not so sure. January is already shaping up to be just as bad as years past.
I turned 47 a couple of days ago, and while that is bad in its own right it was made even worse by the fact that I thought I would only be turning 46. It wasn’t until the day before that I was stripped of that fantasy by my loving husband.
It’s been an act of gargantuan discipline to stay out of the melee that was the election, but as my friend Carol says, “I’ve seen things that I can never unsee”. January 1st hit and I had high hopes for an easier more gentle year ahead. That all stopped with a knock at the door. I opened it up and there was a police officer standing there.
“Can I help you?” I asked wondering if someone was hurt or I forgot to pay my taxes. “I’m looking for Rena McDaniel”, he said. “That would be me,” I said starting to worry a little bit. Don’t worry I’m not in trouble. It turns out that all my moving has left people scratching their heads trying to find me.
Many of you know that in another life I was a mail carrier. Well, it seems that I can never get away from it no matter how hard I try. While I was on my route one day I can over the hill on a rainy Tuesday to see both sides of the street lined with police cars from several different organizations. State police, county police, and probably a few more that I didn’t know.
I stopped at the end of the driveway, but I couldn’t get to the mailbox because of all of the police cars. Luckily for me, there was an officer standing beside the road. So I asked him if he would stick the mail in the box and went on my merry way wondering what all of the hoopla was about.
Now, this is a pretty remote part of the country where I come from so police lining the streets was not something that you see every day. As soon as made it past the property my cell phone rang and it was my girlfriend and fellow carrier asking me if I had gotten through. I knew that she already knew what was going on, but was stretching it out for effect. “So what gives?” I asked already knowing that she was dying to tell me.
“Mr. & Mrs. Smith (the names have been changed for reasons that I’m not quite sure of) were murdered last night. We talked back in forth about motives and suspects. All the things that keep the gossip mill going strong in Small town, USA. The couple whom I had just recently met had been murdered in their homes, actually asleep in their beds if the gossip mill was correct.
I felt sorry for the family and the horrible loss that they would be soon dealing with, but I have to say I went on with my route and didn’t think too much more about it. I got back to the post office and told my boss what had happened. He wasn’t top happy that I had given the officer the mail, but he took straight from me and put it in the box so I wasn’t too worried about it. Besides, my old boss was famous for making a mountain out of a mole hill.
I heard about here and there when things were happening and it was slow going for a long time. The farm sat empty falling into disrepair from neglect. Life went on and I moved post offices, I had an accident, and I was no longer able to work. I moved from there to here and only thought about it when old friends would bring it up.
They had arrested their only son for murdering his parents. I didn’t know him. Had never met him. So, imagine my surprise when in 2013 I got a phone call from the State’s Attorney telling me that he needed me to come back and testify about what I saw that day. “Huh?” I said dumbfounded. “I didn’t see anything. Just a line of police cars. I handed the mail to one of your officers and I went on my merry way.”
“Yeah, that’s the thing we need you to testify that you handed the mail to the police officer,” he said. You’ve got to be kidding me?!? They rented me a car, paid for a hotel, and my food so that I could walk into a courtroom say, “I handed the mail to the police.” That’s it! My husband had to take off work because I couldn’t drive. I had to find a place for mom for the three days we would have to be up there. For that!
So, imagine my surprise when the police officer that had knocked on my door had a message from the same detective that had tracked me down in 2013. As soon as I heard his voice I said, “You’ve got to be kidding me!” His conviction was overturned and now they are retrying him so once again I have to travel back home to say, “I handed the mail to a police officer!”
So once again hubby is taking a vacation, mom is going well somewhere, I don’t quite have that figured out yet. They’ll rent me a car, pay for a hotel so that I can say those 8 little words which apparently mean a lot in this trial. I can’t believe that I’m going to have to do this AGAIN!
Maybe next time I’ll tell you about the time a crazy man had me on his hit list and I only found out when I was contacted by the FBI!
Come on February!
